Journal Blog #3: Introductions.

The hardest thing to do for almost any task is...   to start. Especially when it comes to writing, the first words are the hardest to produce. Maybe this is due to procrastination and other pressures, but often has to do with the pressure of the first sentence. As we discussed in class, the first sentence is the first step of the essay, and it has to be a good one. If the introduction is misleading, it can affect your credibility in the mind of the reader.

We are also trying to remember our lessons about description. The introduction is often when our descriptive tools need to be sharpest. Good description is gripping. It is moving. It can inspire a reader to keep calm and carry on.

In this edition, please post your best attempt at an introduction about Thai food. Those of us who know Thai food understand that the senses are on high alert when seeing and smelling and savouring all that there is to offer. Let's see some of those experiences coming though.

Remember that the thesis statement is:While Thailand has so much to offer any visitor, the one thing no one should miss is the diversity and delight of Thai street food. Don't forget to include your ID# in your post. Aj. M

  1. “Sniffs..sniffs..”, “Hmmm...” was the first word that came out of my mouth as I walked into a ground full of lights from yellow to blue. It was my first night in Thailand when my family and I decided to explore and get dinner around our hotel. The smell and sound from the night market nearby got our attention while we were walking to a nearby restaurant. As we followed the scent and sound, we could see a market full of crowds and mouthwatering street foods. Similarly to my country Malaysia, Thailand is also a country filled with vast types of attractions, from food and beverages to heritage buildings and cultural handicrafts. While squeezing myself through the crowded narrow aisle, I only got a second or two to peek at those appetizing foods and I had to get myself back into the crowd once more to buy them as there was no time to think and choose during the first walk. After buying the foods, I dug in right away, the flavors from sweet to spicy took my thoughts away from that uncomfortable situation. First, I start off with some appetizers, “Som tam” (papaya salad) then “Kao pad” (fried rice) and end it with some dessert the mango sticky rice. I also tried other Thai snacks like the coconut cream jelly, the Thai crepe and many other more. It’s all worth it when I got my first bite on the foods. While Thailand has so much to offer any visitors, the one thing no one should miss is the diversity and delight of Thai street food.

    1. Some really wonderful descriptive moments here. The use of your personal voice is also effective here, as we really can follow you through the "crowded narrow aisles." Well done.

    2. In conclusion, Thailand is a well-known country for the diversity of food and tourism experience. Most tourists come to Thailand and would plan their next trip back on the spot. A few days is Thailand is just not enough for one to explore around and activate their tastebuds. Thailand gives people an unforgettable experience especially the famous street foods. As a tourist myself, during my time here in Thailand, the plan to come back had started to float through my mind. If you would ask me, what I miss most about Thailand? That would be not other than the variety of flavors (spicy, salty, and sweet) from the street foods. In other words, one’s holiday to Thailand may not be complete without trying those flavorful street foods.

  2. Food defines one’s culture. Thai food culture is refreshing common and rewards those who are ready to take a chance with new dishes. Thailand has one of the most affordable and tastiest street food. It is alley after alley of shops selling fresh vegetables, seafood and freshly cooked dishes. There is a hint of tanginess along with smokey essence arising from the sizzling coal that is barbecuing the meat. Thai street food pleases all the senses on your tongue. Somtam is one of the most popular street food in Thailand, it is sweet, sour, spicy, salty salad made from finely grated raw papayas, tomatoes, garlic, dried shrimp, peanuts and chili peppers. Other delicacies of Thai street is Mhoo Ping which is pork skewers that is eaten with sticky rice and is usually consumed as breakfast by Thai people. While Thailand has so much to offer any visitors, the one thing no one should miss is the diversity and delight of Thai street food.

  3. “Shuu”.... the sound when meat meet the boiled oil in the pan. The savoury smell blow gently upon the wind to my nose which was made my experience of eating so amazing and felt like eating in a five-star hotel that made by Michelin chef but, in all actuality I ate the Thai street food in a roadside. I waked in a Thai street food market and tried to taste many types of Thai food as much as possible because Thai food has its identity and the taste quite unique from other country. I ate one of the most delicious one and it is also be a signature cuisine of Thai food which is called Pad Thai or Thai style Fried Noodles. For Thai food we like to put the five basic taste together, namely: sweet, salt, sour, bitter, and umami which make the final taste delectable, and Thai chef also care about the quality of the ingredients. For example, rice noodles are quitesoft and sticky, White shrimps are very fresh and did not have any stinking smell. I can say that everything is really perfect and it is going to be a great impression with Thai food for foreigners. While Thailand has so much to offer any visitor, the one thing no one should miss is the diversity and delight of Thai street food.

    2. In conclusion, I can say that Thailand has not just many beautiful places and abundance natural resources. Food is one of the most important thing that tourists should have an experience with. There are many restaurants in Thailand but street food is the best and it is worth it. As I told in the beginning that eating on the street in Thailand is like eating in the food of Michelin chef. Not just their taste that can make you feel great but the price is very cheap. To put it simply, coming to Thailand can fulfill every part in your life, not just come and travel…but come and have new experiences with your tongue.

  4. Walking at chaotic night market street surrounded by a wide range of stalls and hearing car's horn, vendor’s sound is what I imagine about the place for street food. More and more people have no time to cook at home, so they are interested in street-side cuisine to be an alternative because of affordable price, ready-to-eat meals, and delicious taste. When I go to the night market with friends, I will see many blonde hairs and backpacker there. Chinatown is one of the most famous night markets where people able to taste delicious food with low-cost price as well as visitors are able to try to eat with chopsticks, and I used to see they are interesting in sharing food of Thai residents. Along the side of the crowded road, people can see a variety of food such as fresh yellow mango slices with sticky rice and sweet coconut syrup, Pad thai serving with hot pan, grilled seafood skewers. While Thailand has so much to offer any visitor, the thing no one should miss is the diversity and delight of Thai street food

    1. Having a delightful meal at street side where is full of food carts in the crowded night is the amazing experience of street food. Due to the limited time for preparing a large meal, the increasing number of people substitute it with tasty street-side cuisine, so they not only save time but also their money. More and more blonde-hair people are carrying backpack on their backs come to visit Thailand for tasting the variety of street food additionally these foreigners can get in touch with local food culture such as sharing food. To say about street food, what is pop up into my mind is Chinatown because it is one of the most popular places for street-side cuisine. If people who visit in Thailand had not tasted street food, they would have felt miss.

  5. In chaotic city, Bangkok, the scented smell of food blows to nose makes many tummy rumble with hunger. Thought the area is surrounded with crowded and hot temperature, food brings people here. Smoke rising from food shows us how fresh it is, and the sound when cooking remind us to imagine how delicious the taste is. Good taste and tangible price create Thai street food to be one of the top cuisine. The diversities of seasoning and favoring making eaters get in touch with local culture and the city. Whatever dishes you chose, it will be probably the tastiest food for your whole life.

  7. To learn or go deeper into one’s culture, food can be one alternative for you to start looking into. In Thailand food culture is one of the biggest cultures in our country, since we have many background stories about each type of Thai cuisine. Thai’s cooking consists of five main elements including sour, spicy, sweet, salty and rich. Futurmore Thai dishes are also influenced by noodles from Chinese and various spices from Indian. Tom Yum Kung is one of the most distinguished menu in Thailand, also known as spicy shrimp soup. It is not only provide distinctive taste in general, but also good for your health because of herbal ingredients such as lemongrass, chilli, galangal and lime. However there are still tons of attractive street food and meals for you to try in Thailand.

Most people at there do not know what is Thailand, but when I talk about Thai food; they know what it is. It is indicate the famous of Thai food. However, the tourists in Thailand should to try street food because it is different from any Thai food that you had eaten before. When the tourists walk through the street in Thailand, they must meet the diversity of food ,such as Som Tam(papaya salad), Pad Thai kung(Noodles with shrimp) and Moo Bing(Grilled pork skewers); these foods have many savour in themselves. For instance, Som Tam has sour, sweet, salted and spicy in the same time. These flavors are the identity of Thailand, so the visitors must not miss the street food of Thailand.

    1. To sum up, Thai street food is similar to the fast food of westerners. When people in the rush hours, they need something fast. Therefore, most people love to buy fast food but in Thailand, street food can replace the fast food because it has more benefits, such as healthy, cheap and delicious. I certify that if you try Thai street food, you will never forget its for a whole life.

  9. "I can't eat Thai food because they all are very spicy" This is what I've always heard from my friends from overseas. Before I successfully encouraged my friends to eat Thai food, I had decided to bring them to one of the most well known places where they all could enjoy seeing people's lifestyle and eating Thai food by streets. As we arrived at noon, heat from the sun completely lessened our energies as if we were in the middle of Sahara desert. We decided to keep walking throughout a long narrow street, fulling of crowds and noises from all over the place. The more we walked, the more we could smell various combination of traditional Thai food from both sides of the street. We eventually made our way to a small shop selling simple affordable dishes. While waiting for food that we ordered, we could smell the freshness of cuisines going around from tables to tables as vendors were serving, making us swallow harder, calling for food that we awaited more. Once the food were served at our table, we all agreed that Tom Yum Koong was the best dish so far as it created sour and spicy flavors at the same time with herbal smell that was hard to be forgotten. After we had a try for different type of Thai dishes, some were spicy and some weren't, all of my friends had come to the same conclusion " We shouldn't have spent our time just to do sightseeing for whole 2 days ago. We wish we could spend more time looking for new Thai dishes, especially the ones at Thai street food." While Thailand has so much to offer any visitors, the one thing no one should miss is the diversity and delight of Thai street food.

  11. There are several foods around the world, but there is a unique food that shares the taste of spicy, sour, and sweet in one dish. In Thailand, Thai food had been developed over the years by Thai ancestors, and also invented many of recipes. Thai food has the ravishing flavor of spice which will make your tough melt and a fresh heavy smell of Thai pepper and chili. Moreover, the dish that tourists must try in Thailand is Tom Yam Kung, because it combined all three flavors that make this dish is the best in Thailand.

    1. Firstly, lets talk about Thai famous dish called "Tom tum kung". This this is well-known all around the world because of its spiciness and sourness. Moreover, the spiciness came from Thai chili called " Prik ki nu" this chili is the most spicy in Thailand. Prik ki nu can raise the spicy symtomp to work at its full potential and help consumer to taste Tom yum kung at the highest quality and make people to feel like they are eating their meal in a hot desert. In fact, most foreign who try Tom yum kung for first time have to cry for water. Other than the spiciness, Tom yum kung also need to add sourness by Thai lemon. This is because the mixture between spicy and sour is incomparable. last but nit least, Tom Yum Kung taste also improve by the smell of Thai spices and herbs. Mixing it with the spiciness and sourness before is a complete main dish for many people.

  15. When I ask most of the people who had visited Thailanad that, "What was the most thing you like from there?", And the answer is always "I love the street food there!". I just came back from studying abroad five years, so today I came to treasure the truth.

I 'm trying to walk in the middle the crowd, the mixes of vendors promoting and people talking make me feel like it's a foreign language. I can't catch any of those words. There were many food stalls put up on the both side of the footpath, they all look delicious. So I stop at a stall, there is nothing special about the look of it but the smell of a sweet mango and a little salty smell of coconut milk could catch my nose. My mouth is watering.

I sat on a foldable steel table near the stall after order a mango sticky rice with coconut milk. I watch everyone walking around, some stop by the stall, people talking like bees buzzing and smells of many foods are battering in the air. Not too long after, the vendor came serve the plate on my table.

I pick up the fork and start having it. The sweetness of the mango and little salty of the coconut milk suits well with a soft sticky rice. I try to have it slowly as I didn't want it to get over. While Thailand has so much to offer any visitor, the one thing no one should miss is the diversity and delight of Thai street food.

    3. In the evening the street food market's even more crowded than in the afternoon. "Can there even be more people coming to the market?" I asked myself while trying to pass through the crowd. I decide to keep walking and enjoying the delicious smell of varies of food and smiles on people's face while having food with their friends and family.

Though the sun is slowly moving down but the heat is still certain, this might be because the vendors are continously cooking and the crowd. But that didn't effect me, in my hand is a cup of coconut ice-cream topped with boil corns and tiny square toasted breads. The sound of spatulas and pans clashing together like it's performing an orchresta show, I slowly nod my head along.

Foreigners with backpacks are walking with many polythene bags in their hands and looking at the stalls along the footpath. I began to think about why the visitors should not look across the street food markets here. And the answer is, it is not just varies of food that attract people here but it is also cheap in price, easy to get and obviously delicious. The signature of Thailand is sure a tourism places but I think the visitors will never and can never forget about the street foods here too.

It was a bustling evening. After we had visited all the temples and museums, we all agreed to settle our long exhausting trip at Yaowarat night market. However, before we even begin our wandering, Alessandro was already enchanted since he had been surrounded by innumerable ready-to-eat street food, charmed by the smell of fresh-cooked Som Tam and distracted by colorful-like-rainbow dessert in the middle of the night. That’s the reason we instantaneously grasped the spirit of the modern Thai lifestyle. “I can’t believe my own eyes… this place is simply… fantastic!” This is what Alessandro, an Italian friend who came to visit during the gap year, surprisingly yelled when he first tried literal street food experience at Chinatown. It was a bustling evening. After we had visited all the temples and museums, we all agreed to settle our long exhausting trip at Yaowarat night market. However, before we even began our wandering, Alessandro was already enchanted as he had been surrounded by innumerable ready-to-eat street food, charmed by the scent of fresh-cooked Som Tam and distracted by colorful-like-rainbow Thai dessert in the midst of the night. He was totally bewildered; he didn't know where to start; one night probably wouldn't be enough for him to visit all the stalls throughout the market! Meanwhile, the nonstop noise of tourists chatting and the smell of various food mixed up then began to tickle our noses... more and more…, and that’s when we immediately grasped the spirit of the modern Thai lifestyle. The crowded and timeless atmosphere of the Thai markets is a major key that helps enrich Thailand’s food industry, and, most importantly, its popularity and attractiveness are inevitable. That is to say, while Thailand has so much to offer any visitor, the one thing no one should miss is the diversity and delight of Thai street food.

“I’m really glad you came,” I said to Alessandro, slightly before his leaving. “Being so tired after a long trip, and after devouring excessive food, I guess we will be drained of energy and sleeping still like a dead raccoon for weeks!” replied Alessandro— it was a bit of a giggle. Unlike the first day, it was a sunshiny day at the airport, and I was certain he would return again someday. It was little but great pride observing foreigners indulging themselves with a plate of Som Tam with chili brimming over, or even a stick of steaming Moo Ping.
Because once you try Thai food, not only will you absorb the taste of the dish, but also the backstory of every neatly cooked meal. You can’t just get rid of the spicy and unique flavor actively flowing on top of your tongue, and that you can’t ever... and... ever... get enough of it.

In the field of natural attractions, there are loads of beaches and islands, where you can lay on the soft white sand and listen to the hits of the waves while sunbathing. Watching the relaxing scenario like the horizontal line, where the emerald green ocean meets the blue sky, is pleasant and relieve all the tension away. That is the reason why Thailand is one of the best options for spending a holiday here. Besides, some people also named Bangkok as a portion of street food as synonyms because this country has both day and night market included a variety type of food. The smell is a part of food that will make people want to foretaste that food. And the aroma of Thai food prepared with spices such as garlic, basil, pepper, and onions can motivate people who are walking in the street to want to eat the food like being sucked into a magnet. Above all, the tastes of Thai cuisines can be amended to suit individual desires. For example, ordering some papaya salad, western people mostly do not like the foods that are too spicy, so they can order a lower amount of chilies in certain dishes. Not only that the variety of Thai food in each region is also unique and different flavors according to the culture of that region.
